THE RACE:

DATE: August 14, 2010
The "U.S.A. Surf N' Turf Adventure Race" at South Padre Island Adventure Race puts two member teams through a multi-sport challenge of 7-15  miles of urban mountain biking throughout South Padre Island, 2-3 miles of running in the dunes,  and water activities. Teams will also face mystery events that will include a water activity (swimming without a PFD may be involved in this event) at Schlitterbahn Water Park...be prepared to get WET!  The two person teams travel together and compete in all events, emphasizing team work.  Teams will finish the race in  2-4 hours. Teams must provide two mountain bikes, two helmets,  and two  life jackets.

DIVISIONS:
Coed, Male, Female,  Open Masters (each member must be at least 40 years old),  Family (must be related), & Open Juniors (ages 13-19).

ENTRY FEE:
$60 per team for "Open Juniors" only! (no late fee)
$80 per team early entry discount (before 8/02/10)
$100 per team on race day (after 8/02/10)

RACE TIMES:
Races start at 7:30 a.m., so register early!

FEE INCLUDES:
T-shirt, great goody bag, fruit,  use of inflatable tubes, and lots of great FUN!

AWARDS:
The top 10 teams in each category will be awarded.

FAQs:

  • Can I register on race day? No. You can register/pick-up your packet at: TBD on Friday, August 13, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. only. To due to time constraints, on-site registration has been eliminated to make things go smoother & on a timely manner on race day.
  • Can someone else pick up my packet? No. All Team members must be present to sign waiver. Teams will not be given a bib number unless both members have signed their waivers. 
  • Can someone else check-in for my on race day? No. Each team member must be present. We will not allow anyone else to check-in and pick up bib numbers.
  • Where do I park on race day? You will be able to park near: TBD
  • Where do I place my gear? On race day, you will have an area to bring all of your race gear (i.e. bike, helmet, shoes, hydration paks, lifejackets, etc.). This area is called the "Transition Area" or "TA". Once you park, you will walk over to the TA and place your belongings. We strongly suggest you mark your belongings.
  • Here are some suggested items: Sun block, extra water, bars & gels for fueling, tarp or large towel (to place belongings on), extra water, Gatorade or energy drinks, extra tubes, multi-tool.
  • What are the race distances? That is all part of adventure racing. You will not be given the exact distances. All race instructions/maps will be given out the morning of the race.
  • Do I have to stay with my partner during the entire race? Yes. The essence of adventure racing is all about "team work". You must stay within 15 feet of each other. If a course marshall catches you, you may receive a heavy time penalty or even be disqualified.
  • Is this race only for experienced racers?
    No, this race is for the beginner racer to the experienced adventure racer. Our mission, is to make sure everyone has FUN!

  • What should I wear?
    You should wear comfortable clothing. Men should wear sleeveless or short sleeve shirts made of breathable & dry-wicking material. Women can wear sports bras, tanks, or shirts also made of breathable & dry-wicking material.
  • Will there be any water stops?
    No, there will not be any water stops in the race course. Adventure racing is a self-sufficient event that teaches individuals to be accountable for themselves.
  • What are mystery events?
    Mystery Events can be physical challenges such as running through an obstacle with your teammate. They can also require intellect such as solving a word problem. All the Mystery Events in the Duel of the Dunes are designed so teams can be successful, feel challenged and definitely have fun!
